YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS FOR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING AND TO PARTICIPATE IN DECISION-MAKING

Project Introduction

This project initiated from 2018 funded by UNFPA/UNESCO/KOICA/DFAT. FPAN is the implementing partners for UNFPA Strategic Plan Outcome 2: Every adolescent and youth, in particular adolescent girls, is empowered to have access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, in all contexts. Under this outcome, FPAN was responsible to execute all the advocacy related activities and capacity building of school teachers through CSE basic and refresher training.

The major activities of this collaboration in Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) program includes: Advocacy workshops to create policy environment for CSE integration; Develop capacity of teachers to deliver quality CSE in both in-and-out-of-schools and Support to endorse and roll-out of the AFIC Operation Guideline.

The project covers ten districts from Province 1,2,5, and 7 namely

  • Accham
  • Bajura,
  • Bajhang,
  • Baitadi,
  • East Rukum,
  • Sunsari,
  • Rautahat,
  • Sarlahi,
  • Accham and
  • Bajura.

Project Goal

Promotion, integration and mainstreaming of gender and human rights with attention to sexual and reproductive health of adolescent into curricula and its delivery, both in school and out of school settings.

Project Objectives

To enhance knowledge of young people on CSE and improve health seeking behaviors by establishing and strengthening Adolescent Friendly Information Corners (AFICs) through capacity building of school teachers on delivery of CSE.

Specific Objectives

  • To create safe, supportive and protective environment for all adolescents.
  • To enhance life skills and improve the health status of adolescents.
  • To increase accessibility and utilization of adolescent friendly health and counseling services.
  • To increase adolescents’ access to scientifically sound and age-appropriate information about their health and development.
  • To strengthen technical capacity of schoolteachers on CSE delivery.
  • To advocate in coordination with like-minded organizations, concerned stakeholders, ministry of education for the inclusion of CSE in national curriculum.
  • To promote inter-sectoral coordination and collaboration at federal, province, district and local level to ensure commitment and action for promoting CSE for adolescents.

 

Project Activities

There are several activities conducted by FPAN as part of this project.

Activity 1: Advocacy with relevant Policy Makers for a favourable policy environment for CSE integration at the national and sub-national levels

  1. Provincial Level Consultation Workshop on Importance and Integration of Comprehensive Sexuality Education into Program
  2. CSE Technical working group meeting inclusive of relevant Education Policy makers from various ministries/department +CSOs and DPs. (central level/provincial level)
  3. On-site mentoring and Coaching to CSE Trained Teachers and Peer educators

 

Activity 2: Strengthen AFICs through IEC Materials

  1. Development of CSE flip chart
  2. Youth Consultation meeting to develop flip chart
  3. Development of CSE Saathi Training Manual
  4. Endorsement/launching of AFIC operational guideline
  5. Development and printing of an annex of CSE Training Resource Material aligning with ITGSE 2018

 

Activity 3: Comprehensive Sexuality Education Training

  1. Five Days Teachers training on CSE to the teachers
  2. Rapid Feasibility Survey of Online CSE review and refresher training
  3. Refresher Training and Review Meeting of teachers on sharing their experiences in teaching CSE to students, especially to adolescent girls/boys and young women
  4. Three days CSE & Peer education training to CSE Saathi

Key Achievements:

During this FY following are the key achievements made:

  • Inclusion of CSE components in school curriculum i.e., from grade 4-12.
  • Endorsement and acknowledgement of CSE work/production by CEHRD, CDC, FWD, NHEICC.
  • Development of CSE IEC BCC materials (CSE flip chart) to facilitate CSE teaching learning.
  • Supported in establishing linkage between CEHRD and FWD for CSE activities.
  • Comprehensive training on CSE has created an enabling environment for teacher and students to discuss on the SRH issues.
